Beekeeping jobs by season

Beekeeping jobs by season

Our beekeeping team is busy all year round — always busy preparing, planning, maintaining, extracting and processing honey. Beekeepers must be ready to react quickly to natural circumstances — whether it's bad weather and extra care for the hives or ideal conditions and an abundant honey yield.

We currently have around 10,000 hives, which is a number we can maintain thanks to the dedication and work of our beekeepers in the field. During the summer we hire additional staff to respond to the increased workload.

Queens rule the hives

In the spring and autumn, our expert in breeding queens works on rejuvenating and strengthening bee colonies. New queens are introduced into the hives using special cages with honey plugs, which the other bees gradually gnaw away. That way, they get used to the new queen before she leaves the cage — otherwise they might recognize her as an intruder and attack.

Checking the condition of the hives after winter

At the end of winter, our team visits the hives to check the health of the bees and the condition of the colonies after the cold months.

Manuka honey season

Manuka honey season runs from November to February/March. It is a period of intense organization and coordination — the hives, beekeepers and trucks must be in the right place at the right time, when the manuka plant is in bloom.

Beehives are moved at night or early in the morning to avoid disturbing the bees. When they arrive at a new location, the bees leave the hive, do an orientation flight and then go in search of flowers, bringing the nectar back to the hive where they turn it into honey.

Honey harvesting and processing

During December and January, while the manuka is in bloom, the bees are hard at work collecting nectar and making honey. When the hives are full or when the season ends, the honey harvest begins. Our team collects hives from different, often inaccessible locations and transports them to our honey processing plant.

From April to June, honey is removed from the comb, then stored in barrels of 300 kg each in our warehouse, where it is stored until packaging. During this period, the honey is carefully monitored and tested to ensure its highest quality. The best honey is then packed into jars and prepared to be sent to markets around the world.
